Participant Spotlight: Tony Dunning

Tony Dunning, survivor fitness participant

One of the most surprising—and powerful—aspects of a cancer journey is how it forges meaningful and unexpected connections. Whether through chance meetings, divine timing, or a simple invitation, these relationships can become lifelines.

Survivor Fitness participant Tony Dunning’s path has been shaped and strengthened by these kinds of moments. Each connection he’s made has played a key role in his healing and created a ripple effect that’s still making an impact today. Tony’s story reminds us that when survivors are supported well, they pay it forward in extraordinary ways.

A Battle on Two Fronts

Tony’s cancer journey began in 2015 with a diagnosis of prostate cancer. He underwent a successful prostatectomy at the Mayo Clinic in early 2016 and spent the next several years cancer-free. But in early 2024, he received a tough update: his PSA levels were rising again, indicating a possible recurrence. A new round of imaging and tests revealed a recurrence of prostate cancer and a new diagnosis of bladder cancer.

“2024 was kind of a crummy year,” Tony shared. “I spent the balance of the year really focused on treating two totally different types of cancer, with two different paths of treatment. I did my prostate cancer treatment at Mayo in Rochester and my bladder cancer treatment at Vanderbilt. It was a lot.”

Despite the heavy toll—physically, mentally, and emotionally—Tony never lost sight of his commitment to staying active and finding ways to keep moving forward.

A Chance Meeting that Changed Everything

While staying active through workouts at a local CrossFit gym, Tony was introduced to Tom Milam—the founder of the Nashville Wine Auction, an event he and his wife, Diane, had supported for years. The Wine Auction, which has raised over $40 million for cancer-related organizations since its founding, holds a special place in their hearts. During the 2024 event, Tom took the stage and publicly recognized Tony and Diane from the crowd, sharing their story with everyone in the room.

“After Tom shared our story, this woman I didn’t know came up and introduced herself as Meg Grunke,” Tony recalled. “She said she was involved with an organization called Survivor Fitness and wanted to talk to me.”

Tony didn’t know what that meant at the time, but within days, Meg followed up.

“She explained the programs, and the rest is history.”

Several weeks later, Tony applied and was connected with trainer Zlatko Hundur—someone he affectionately refers to as “Z.” From their very first meeting, Tony knew he’d found someone who truly understood how to walk with survivors through their recovery.

“Z took us under his wing,” Tony said. “We were very disciplined—very committed. We went every single day, including over Thanksgiving and Christmas. We were all in.”

One of the most meaningful aspects of his training experience was that Diane could attend sessions with him. “We did it together. That made it even more powerful.”

Though progress was slow at times, the impact was undeniable. “It’s a slog. You don’t see results overnight; it’s a slow burn. But week one versus week ten? Then you start to see it. And the accountability, the reason to show up? It gave me a reason to believe again.”

A Wine Tasting with a Purpose

Not long after completing his initial training with Survivor Fitness, Tony had the chance to give back in an unexpected and deeply meaningful way. At the Survivor Fitness Soirée, he and Diane won an auction item: a private wine-tasting experience for 50 people. They decided to turn this opportunity into something much bigger. They hosted a large group of friends for a wine tasting, complete with food, education, and a video that introduced guests to the Survivor Fitness mission.

Andrew Tow, who led the tasting, donates all profits to the nonprofit of your choice,” Tony explained. “So of course we chose Survivor Fitness. As a bonus, the other person who won the same auction item did the same. Together, both events raised about $5,000.”

But the impact didn’t stop there. “Because of that event, Andrew was so moved he decided to make a $10,000 donation from his foundation. It just turned into this amazing flywheel.”

What started as a fun evening turned into something powerful: awareness, connection, and lasting support for future participants.

Paying It Forward

Tony knows just how much of a gift Survivor Fitness has been, and he’s committed to making sure others experience it too.

“Coincidentally, a good friend of mine was diagnosed with prostate cancer not long after I was,” Tony shared. “I told him, you have to go to Survivor Fitness. And now he’s in the program and benefiting from it just like I did.”

For Tony, the work Survivor Fitness is doing is more than a support program—it’s a blessing.

“It’s just such a gift from God that this thing even exists. To have the vision, the foresight to bring this to life—and then to see it sustaining, growing… it’s just incredible.”

And the impact doesn’t stop with participants. It grows as they regain their strength and confidence, then pass it on to others.

“We’ve benefited so much as a family,” Tony said. “And it’s exciting to now be part of giving back—to help make sure others get the same opportunity.”

Conclusion: The Ripple Effect of Connection

From a chance conversation with a stranger to a structured training program with a purpose, Tony Dunning’s Survivor Fitness journey is a testament to the power of meaningful connection. Each step—from personal healing to community fundraising—has created a ripple effect that continues to spread.

Participant Spotlight: Jen Lewis

Jen Lewis in green dress

Cancer doesn’t wait for the “right time.” It doesn’t care if you’re young, healthy, or planning for one of the most exciting seasons of life. For Jen Lewis, a breast cancer diagnosis came during her journey to become a mom. What followed was an unexpected battle through chemo, surgeries, and recovery—but also a story of grit, grace, and an unshakable hope for the future.

When Jen discovered a lump on her breast just before her fourth round of IUI fertility treatment, her world came to a halt. What began as a hopeful journey toward motherhood quickly turned into a fight for her life. But through every setback, Jen chose to fight hard. And when she was finally ready to rebuild, Survivor Fitness was there to help.

Rebuilding Strength One Rep at a Time

Jen was no stranger to the gym before her diagnosis. Fitness had long been a part of her life. But after 16 rounds of chemo, a double mastectomy, and a massive stomach ulcer, Jen’s body had been through it all. She was ready to heal, and she knew she couldn’t do it alone.

“I figured there had to be some kind of support group that could help me get back in the gym and start over in my strength training,” Jen shared. “My Google search did not disappoint. I found Survivor Fitness!”

She was matched with trainer Mariah Smith at Chadwick’s Fitness in Franklin, and from their first meeting, Jen felt at ease.

“I’m someone who, when I make a decision, I dive RIGHT IN. But Mariah helped me go slow and gave me reasons as to WHY we were going slow. I needed time to heal, and she helped me through it.”

With guidance and encouragement, Jen slowly returned to her strength training routine.

“I’m in no way where I was, but I’m on my way,” she said. “A year after completing the program, I still work out at least three times a week!”

Battling Through Setbacks, Finding Hope

While Jen worked to regain her physical strength, the mental challenges were just as daunting

“Mentally speaking—WHAT. A. BATTLE,” she admitted. “I was used to doing so much cardio nonstop, curling over 20 pounds, and seeing muscle tone. That all went out the window.”

The emotional toll of seeing her body change and struggling to return to her former abilities was heavy. But Survivor Fitness helped her regain confidence and compassion for herself.

“I’m able to more easily give myself grace now. My body had to do what it had to do in order to stay alive.”

Still, the hardest part of Jen’s journey wasn’t the treatments or surgeries. It was the uncertainty surrounding her dream of becoming a mom.

“I might never be able to have children of my own,” she recalled thinking. “That shook me.”

But with the help of her oncology and fertility teams, Jen was able to freeze embryos before starting chemo and take monthly medication to preserve her reproductive health. And then, nearly a year and a half later, everything changed again.

“On the day of my first Survivor Fitness Soirée, September 2024, MY BODY SAID HELLO! And five months after that, February 2025, God said, ‘I got you,’ even more. My first embryo transfer was positive. I was pregnant.”

A Message to Others: There Is Hope

Jen’s journey is one of strength, setbacks, and soul-deep perseverance. She credits her faith, her care team, and Survivor Fitness for helping her through the hardest season of her life. With her first child due in October 2025, she’s living proof that healing and hope can go hand in hand.

“To anyone on a similar journey: ‘The night is always darkest before the dawn.’ There is hope, and there is help,” Jen said. “Even if you want to yell at God, He can take it. Don’t lose hope.”

Jen also had a special message for her trainer:

“Mariah was wonderful. She knew when to push me and when to hold me back. She’s fantastic, and I’d recommend her to anyone!”

Participant Spotlight: Angela Patterson

After receiving a cancer diagnosis, many survivors feel like they’ve lost control over their health and their bodies. Every decision, every step, is driven by the treatment plan. When treatment is over, a new chapter begins. Survivors are often eager to regain their strength and return to normal life, but knowing where to start can be overwhelming. That’s exactly how Angela Patterson felt after her journey through diagnosis and treatment.

When Angela went in for a routine procedure in April 2024, she never imagined it would change her life.

“I had been having some abdominal pain, and my doctor suggested a simple procedure,” Angela explained. “It was during that surgery that they discovered the cancer.”

From that moment, life moved fast. She met with an oncologist, underwent a second surgery in May, and started chemotherapy in June. By the end of August, after three rounds of treatment and a clear CT scan, Angela was declared cancer-free. But as she celebrated the good news, she was met with a new set of challenges.

The Long Road to Feeling “Normal” Again

Like many cancer survivors, Angela faced overwhelming fatigue and physical limitations after treatment. Walking became difficult, and everyday tasks suddenly required all her energy.

“Most days after surgery were spent resting. Just walking to the mailbox was a big deal,” she recalled. “Then I’d start to feel better, and it would be time for another chemo treatment. It felt like a roller coaster.”

On top of the physical struggles, there was also emotional weight to carry, including the fear of the unknown.

“Not knowing how my body would respond to surgery or chemo… that was the hardest part,” Angela said. “I just wanted to feel normal again. I was hoping and praying the treatment would work, but it was mentally and physically draining.”

When her treatment ended, Angela was eager to return to the routine of parenting, working, and living life. But she quickly realized how overwhelming that could be without the right support.

Taking the First Step Toward Recovery

That’s when a friend told her about Survivor Fitness, a nonprofit that helps cancer survivors rebuild their strength and confidence through one-on-one fitness training, nutritional coaching, and mental health support.

“After rest and recovery, I was out of practice! Survivor Fitness felt like the best next step. I reached out right away and got signed up.”

She was paired with a personal trainer named Kate and began her journey back to wellness. Her transformation wasn’t just physical; it was also emotional and empowering.

“Kate was incredible,” Angela said. “She helped me slowly build back strength through workouts and strength training that made sense for where I was in my recovery. That gave me confidence. It helped me start to trust my body again.”

Angela also met with a registered dietitian who helped her incorporate nutrient-dense, antioxidant-rich foods into her meals. She learned how to nourish her body in a way that supported healing and long-term health.

“Both my trainer and dietitian were so helpful,” she shared. “They answered all my questions and helped me feel supported every step of the way.”

A Foundation for Strength, Inside and Out

Through Survivor Fitness, Angela regained her strength and stamina while finding joy in the process.

“The workouts never felt like a chore. They were challenging, but in the best way,” she said. “Survivor Fitness was honestly the best form of self-care.”

Angela met her goal of building back muscle and energy and reclaimed a sense of control over her body and health. To her, that made all the difference.

“It gave me the tools I needed to move forward with confidence,” she explained.

Words of Wisdom for Other Survivors

Now, Angela encourages other survivors to prioritize their well-being after treatment is over.

“It’s so important to take care of yourself. Find a support system. Move your body—even if it’s just a little. Focus on nutrition. It all matters.”

Looking back, Angela views her experience with Survivor Fitness as a turning point in her healing journey.

Participant Spotlight: Tina Wuflestad

Tina Wuflestad, survivor fitness participant

The journey through cancer treatment is often described as a marathon, demanding immense physical and emotional fortitude. But what happens after crossing that finish line? Many cancer survivors find themselves facing a new landscape. The dedicated support of their medical team begins to shift, and the path to rebuilding strength can feel uncertain. During this crucial phase, a different type of support system is needed.

Tina Wuflestad’s story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the profound impact of personalized support in navigating life after cancer. Through her journey with Survivor Fitness, Tina found her physical strength again and discovered a renewed sense of hope and empowerment for the road ahead.

Navigating the Highs and Lows of Treatment & Recovery

Tina was diagnosed with triple positive breast cancer (invasive ductal carcinoma) in April of 2022. Over the next 13 months, her treatment plan was intensive: 12 weeks of chemotherapy, followed by a bilateral mastectomy in September 2022, and then 11 rounds of targeted therapy.

Throughout this challenging period, Tina proactively explored integrative therapies and lifestyle changes to bolster her body’s ability to cope. But even with these holistic approaches, the toll of treatment left her physically depleted.

“Because of the intensity of my chemotherapy regimen, I didn’t have a lot of energy, and I had a few days in between rounds when I didn’t feel up to anything at all,” Tina explained.

Her course of treatment inevitably impacted Tina’s mental and emotional well-being. The constant battle against fatigue and the uncertainty of recovery presented significant hurdles—something many cancer survivors know all too well.

“The hardest part of the journey for me was maintaining the proper mindset for the treatment and healing of my body. There were many ups and downs along the way, but keeping my eyes on the ultimate goal was key,” Tina reflected.

As her treatment concluded, Tina recognized the critical need to actively rebuild her strength and establish a “new normal.” That’s when a friend told her about Survivor Fitness.

Finding a Personalized Path Forward

With her oncologist’s support, Tina applied to the programs after completing her treatments and surgeries. Her goal was simple but powerful: to regain physical strength and take back ownership of her health.

What she found, however, was something much deeper. Like many Survivor Fitness participants, Tina soon discovered the program’s profound benefits for her mental and emotional health as well.

Working one-on-one with a fitness specialist who understood the unique challenges of cancer recovery gave Tina the foundation she needed to move forward with confidence.

“During my time with Survivor Fitness, I enjoyed not only the accountability I had with my trainer, but the customization of exercises specifically tailored to me and my needs. I was able to strengthen my body with proper form and begin the process of regaining my energy and stamina,” Tina shared.

This personalized support instilled in Tina the confidence to continue her fitness journey independently, equipped with the knowledge to understand her body’s needs and how to adapt her exercise routine moving forward.

“Survivor Fitness provided a partnership in my training to guide me and encourage me in order to meet my goals. The support was invaluable to me,” Tina said.

You’re Stronger Than You Think

Tina’s story shows the profound impact of a dedicated partnership in helping cancer survivors rebuild their physical strength and rediscover their inner resilience and confidence.

When asked what advice she would offer someone navigating a similar post-cancer journey, Tina’s message is clear and encouraging.

“Reach out to Survivor Fitness and start the programs. You will learn things about yourself that will surprise you. You are stronger than you think.”

Participant Spotlight: Claudia Rico

Claudia Rico, survivor participant

For many cancer survivors, “treatment” doesn’t end when radiation, chemo, or surgery is completed. Some face long-term plans that make it tough to feel “normal” again. Finding the motivation to keep going—physically, mentally, and emotionally—can be a huge challenge. But it can also be a season for taking steps toward real healing. Survivor Fitness participant Claudia Rico is a perfect example of this kind of resilience.

Claudia was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2022. With a family history of the disease, Claudia decided to have a double mastectomy followed by chemo, radiation, and reconstruction surgery.

“Throughout treatment, I ate well,” Claudia says, “but the radiation scarring and lung inflammation caused a lot of pain. My energy was zapped, and I just didn’t feel like exercising.”

On top of everything, Claudia’s ongoing treatment includes five years of hormone blockers and bi-annual Zometa infusions to offset the damage the hormone blockers can do to her bones.

“I have severe joint aches for two to three weeks after the infusions,” she shared. “What makes that tolerable is knowing it’s helping minimize osteoporosis, so I can keep exercising as I get older. I call that a win!”

Taking the Leap: Connecting with Survivor Fitness

Once Claudia recovered from surgery and the side effects of radiation had subsided, she began looking for ways to regain her strength. She saw Survivor Fitness mentioned several times in a Facebook group called Breast Connect and was inspired by the stories of fellow survivors who had benefited from the programs.

“The more I read about the difference Survivor Fitness was making for my breast cancer sisters, I knew I needed to fill out an application. I had nothing to lose and EVERYTHING to gain.”

After reaching out, Claudia connected with a Survivor Fitness team member who guided her through the process and paired her with Stephanie, a personal trainer in her area. Over the next twelve weeks, Claudia worked out with Stephanie, gradually regaining her strength and confidence. The training sessions were tailored to her unique needs, helping her ease joint pain through stretching, walking, and lifting weights.

But as many participants describe, Claudia shared how Stephanie’s support went far beyond the physical workouts.

“More than anything, the training showed me that even with three years left on hormone blockers, I can start living again now,” she explains. “Stephanie helped me realize I don’t have to wait until treatment is over to start truly living.”

Moving Forward: A New Chapter

After finishing the twelve-week program, Claudia was amazed at how far she’d come. She felt physically stronger and mentally more prepared to take on life’s challenges. She’s even exploring Survivor Fitness’s nutrition or mental health programs to keep her wellness journey going.

Looking back, Claudia sees just how much she’s overcome. These events have taught her to appreciate every moment and focus on controlling what she can.

Her advice to other cancer survivors?

“Take back control of your health and well-being,” she urges. “Even if Survivor Fitness isn’t right for you right now, take it one step at a time, one stretch at a time. Even going up one flight of stairs is progress. Just move away from the disease however you can—it will change everything.”

Participant Spotlight: John Adamick

John Adamick survivor fitness participant

Cancer treatments can be life-saving, but they also leave survivors facing a harsh new reality—one where their bodies and minds feel drastically different from before. The physical and mental toll can be overwhelming, leaving many searching for a way to rebuild strength, confidence, and a sense of normalcy. For Survivor Fitness participants like John Adamick, the journey to recovery is just as critical as the treatment itself.

A Hard-Fought Battle Against Cancer

On December 19, 2022, John received a devastating diagnosis: a rare form of non-Hodgkin T-cell lymphoma. Determined to fight, he underwent three rounds of chemotherapy, but each attempt failed to stop the disease. With limited options remaining, his oncologist at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center began exploring additional measures and clinical trials. Then, against the odds, John received the best news possible:

“Finally, and miraculously, after a fourth and final chemo treatment at Vanderbilt, my illness was successfully treated,” John explained.

Because the treatment worked, John became a candidate for a donor stem cell transplant, a procedure that would give him the best chance at long-term survival. On February 15, 2024, he underwent a transplant at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. The months that followed were grueling—110 days of post-transplant maintenance and daily infusions, all while living in a temporary apartment away from home.

The treatment had worked, but John was left feeling like a shell of himself. Malnutrition and muscle depletion had taken a severe toll. He struggled with food aversions, difficulty swallowing, and painful sores in his mouth from thrush, making eating an exhausting challenge.

“Before treatment, I was a big man of 6’4″ and weighed 280 pounds. During the time frame from my first cancer diagnosis, I lost over 100 lbs from chemo sickness,” John shared. “Many would say I was a walking skeleton.”

Regaining his strength felt like an uphill battle. That’s when John found Survivor Fitness.

Mobility, Endurance, Confidence

After his 110-day stay, John’s oncology team highly recommended he reach out to Survivor Fitness for post-rehabilitation healing and strength.

Our team was able to help John get started training at Performance Training Inc. in his hometown of Knoxville, TN. He was paired with Ben Doyle, a dedicated trainer who constructed a regimen of exercises for healthy muscle mass, mobility, strength, and (last but not least) increased confidence. Step by step, John and Ben worked to rebuild his strength, enhance his endurance, and overcome the physical challenges from his treatment.

“Without Survivor Fitness & PTI, I seriously doubt I would be on track to living a normal life,” John celebrated. “Before Survivor Fitness, I had limited mobility. From a walker to relying on a cane and now walking solely on two feet. “

Looking back on his experience, John described working with Survivor Fitness as “the best thing that ever happened to me.”

“FOR THE HEALTH OF IT!”

For John, this journey was about more than just physical recovery—it was about mindset. Having been an athlete in his younger years, he understood that accomplishing any goal requires dedication, perseverance, and mental resilience.

One motto captured his approach to Survivor Fitness: “FOR THE HEALTH OF IT!” This phrase represents his commitment to regaining his strength and his willingness to fight for a full, healthy life.

After completing the 12-week program, John decided to continue working out with Ben on his own at PTI Knoxville. Each session brought new progress, more confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose.

When asked what advice he would give to someone else facing a similar journey, John responded simply but powerfully: “There is a generous and caring group of people who care. Just look at me—I am a testament to that.”

We’re incredibly proud of John’s resilience and determination. His story truly showcases the power of strength, support, and community.

Participant Spotlight: Russ Campbell

Russ Campbell, survivor fitness participant

Recovering after cancer treatment—whether it’s chemo, radiation, or surgery—demands as much strength, determination, and resilience as the treatment itself. It’s essential to remember that recovery takes time.

This sentiment perfectly captures the journey of Survivor Fitness participant Russ Campbell. Russ was diagnosed with large B cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 2023. His treatment began in February 2024 and consisted of six rounds of chemotherapy administered every three weeks. While he was fortunate not to require surgery or radiation, the journey was anything but easy.

The chemo treatments took a toll on Russ, particularly during the 72 hours following each session, which he described as the most challenging part of his journey. “It usually took a week to 10 days to feel somewhat normal again,” he shared.

Tapping Into a New Level of Mental and Emotional Strength

For Russ, the recovery process was as much a mental battle as a physical one. Before cancer, he was an active 52-year-old who prioritized fitness, but chemotherapy left him dealing with intense nausea, weakness, and fatigue. To combat these symptoms, Russ leaned on his greatest assets: a strong mindset and an incredible support system.

“My wife and kids were instrumental in my success,” Russ said. “Their love and kindness were some of the keys to my recovery.”

Determined to stay active even on the toughest days, Russ pushed himself to move—whether walking the halls during treatment, going for longer neighborhood walks after treatment, riding his e-bike, or lifting light weights. “For me, I learned that perseverance was key. It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” he reflected.

Getting Connected with Survivor Fitness

A few months after completing treatment, Russ sought a more tailored approach to his fitness recovery. A friend who had recently completed Survivor Fitness recommended the programs, and Russ decided to try it. With the financial burdens of his cancer diagnosis, the availability of these no-cost programs made starting his journey toward recovery a real possibility.

Russ was matched with Jillian Spencer, a trainer at Chadwick’s Fitness in Franklin. From the very beginning, Jillian’s expertise and support proved invaluable. “Jillian was nothing short of amazing! She was instrumental in progressing the physical and mental aspects of my journey,” Russ shared.

Jillian began with a careful evaluation of Russ’s capabilities, introducing exercises gradually to prevent injury while building his strength and confidence. Weekly sessions provided a structure and commitment that kept him motivated. As he progressed, Jillian increased the intensity of his routines.

“Survivor Fitness gave me a catapult back into my previous fitness,” Russ said. “In the end, I came out of the programs feeling stronger, healthier, and mentally ready to tackle training on my own.”

Rediscovering Strength and Hope

Since completing the Survivor Fitness programs, Russ has maintained an active lifestyle. He spends an hour at the gym every day, rides his bike three times a week, and recently started rock climbing to add variety to his workouts.

“I’m feeling amazing and strongly recommend anyone who has gone through treatment to give Survivor Fitness a try. It was life-changing!” he shared.

If you or someone you know is navigating life after cancer treatment, Survivor Fitness offers the resources and support to help survivors rebuild their physical and mental health. Learn more about our programs or apply today to begin your journey.

Participant Spotlight: Carol Denise Reed Schmissrauter

Cancer diagnosis and treatment are filled with both progress and setbacks, requiring months or years of surgeries and medical treatments. Yet despite the uncertainty of the future, many survivors show resilience and determination during what can be a long and difficult season of life. That’s exactly how Survivor Fitness participant Carol Denise Reed Schmissrauter has approached her diagnosis.

For nearly two decades, Carol has been courageously battling cancer. Her journey began in 2005 with a diagnosis of in situ breast cancer. After undergoing two biopsies, doctors achieved clean margins on the tumor, and she was placed on a hormone blocker for five years. In 2020, a new challenge arose when doctors discovered a spot on her right chest wall, necessitating a difficult surgery and recovery period. Despite these obstacles, Carol remained active, walking multiple miles several days a week.

However, in 2022, she began experiencing discomfort during her walks. Further tests revealed that the cancer had spread to her bones and liver, leading to a new phase of her fight that involved oral chemotherapy to stabilize the disease.

Overcoming Challenges with Grace and Determination

While undergoing the most recent phase of treatment, Carol’s doctors encouraged her to resume physical activity. Her daughter Shelley suggested Survivor Fitness in July 2024 as a way to maintain and increase her physical strength. Carol also saw it as an opportunity to improve her quality of life both physically and mentally.

“I think physical well-being and mental health go hand in hand,” Carol shared. “I want to be as strong as I can. Cancer is a mental game. It’s only 1% of the equation. Working out improves the other 99%. That is my attitude.”

Through Survivor Fitness, Carol was paired with Margie, a personal trainer who tailored each workout to Carol’s specific needs. During their sessions, Carol began to see noticeable improvements in her physical strength and overall health. For Carol, the individualized approach made a significant difference.

“Margie was so talented, and it felt like one of the best workouts I’ve had in a long time,” she said.

Since Survivor Fitness also offers virtual workout options for those unable to attend sessions in person, the program’s flexibility also appealed to Carol. Easy accessibility ensured that Carol could stay connected with the programs if she couldn’t make it in person.

Facing New Challenges with Courage and Gratitude

In September 2024, Carol faced another challenge when her cancer metastasized to her brain. The physical side effects of this progression made it difficult for her to continue her workouts. While stepping away from her fitness routine has been hard, Carol found comfort and encouragement in Margie’s unwavering support.

“Margie has stayed in touch with me and supported me,” Carol said. “I know that if I called her, she’d take me back for workouts in a heartbeat. I just loved her!”

Now undergoing radiation treatment to address the brain metastases, Carol remains focused on living life to the fullest she continues to fight. Her battle with cancer has profoundly shaped her perspective, teaching her to embrace the present and appreciate each day as it comes.

“It reminds me that my life is not on my timeline but God’s,” she reflected. “I just have to make the best of every day and live it to the fullest.”

Carol finds immense joy in spending time with her three children—Shelley, Joseph, and Steven—as well as her partner, Mike, and her grandchildren, Grayson and Maddox. Her vibrant household also includes a menagerie of beloved animals: two horses, two alpacas, 18 Boer goats, three chickens, a pig named Petunia, and a schnauzer named Zoey.

When asked what advice she would offer to others battling cancer, Carol’s words radiate wisdom and encouragement:

“Know that you are surrounded by love, first and foremost. Cancer helped open my mind to that reality. I’ve been deeply touched by the love and support around me, which only revealed itself through my cancer journey.”

Join the Survivor Fitness Community

Survivor Fitness is deeply grateful for Carol’s story, her insights, and her strength. Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience, community, and living life with intention.

Participant Spotlight: Karin Downs

karin downs, survivor fitness participant

Cancer survivors face a unique set of challenges as they navigate the complexities of their “new normal.” The physical, mental, and emotional toll of treatment can leave a lasting impact, making it difficult to regain strength and reclaim a sense of normalcy.

Almost every Survivor Fitness participant applies to our program because they have a strong desire to gain strength and grow in new ways. Survivor Fitness participant, Karin Downs, embodies the courage and resilience that define that spirit of recovery.

Facing Cancer Three Times

Karin’s journey with cancer began in January 2019 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. While she successfully underwent surgery and recovered, her journey was far from over. In July of 2020, Karen received a new and unrelated diagnosis: a brain tumor. Though the tumor was removed quickly, she faced complications that led to stroke-like symptoms and left her temporarily unable to speak. Just one month later, she learned that the breast cancer had returned. This time, she needed surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiation.

The physical challenges during this period were immense. Recovering from brain surgery left her needing help with nearly every aspect of daily life. Chemotherapy and radiation treatments drained her energy and made simple tasks feel insurmountable. On top of everything, she experienced cognitive difficulties, which added to her frustration.

“I was not able to focus or concentrate. I had memory issues, and general communication was difficult. I also had decreased mental endurance with any task,” Karin recalls. “Then you add chemo brain and the lines blurred; many times it was very frustrating and made me angry because I couldn’t do all that I had done before.”

Finding Encouragement to Make Progress

Despite these overwhelming obstacles, Karin was determined to regain her strength and continue moving forward. She began attending group classes, but she soon realized that she needed something more personalized to address her unique challenges. A friend recommended Survivor Fitness. With enthusiasm and hope, Karin signed up. Shortly after, she was matched with a trainer in Chattanooga.

“I felt like a one-on-one program would be very beneficial due to being active already,” Karin explains. “One-on-one training can be very specific to the participant’s goals and abilities and modified for any difficulties one may have.”

With the support of her trainer, Karin began to make steady progress. When an exercise proved challenging, she and her trainer found ways to adjust so she could succeed. Each session built her confidence and showed her that she could accomplish her goals, even if it took a modified approach at first. Over time, she pushed herself to perform these exercises without modifications—a goal that kept her motivated as her strength and endurance grew.

“The Survivor Fitness programs helped me to push myself but in a safe, supervised manner,” she says. “When you are successful at completing an activity or doing something you couldn’t do in the last session, it makes you happy and excited. That is good for physical well-being, but even more important for the soul and mind.”

Today, Karin celebrates noticeable improvements in both her overall strength and stamina.

Accepting and Embracing the “New” Karin

For Karin, the hardest part of this journey has been learning to accept the “new me” and letting go of who she was before cancer. Focusing on meeting herself where she is now, Karin has embraced the idea that she can move forward with pride in this new version of herself.

“Karin after cancer will be different from Karin before cancer,” she reflects. “Not better, not worse, but different—and that is NOT a bad thing.”

She’s learned to accept that while some abilities may not return in the same way, her journey has opened doors to experiences she may never have pursued otherwise.

“The Survivor Fitness Program renewed my confidence in my body and my ability to do various activities; it has reminded me that I can do almost anything if I work hard, persevere, and stay committed to the activity or task—and also to try new things,” Karin says.

Though she still grapples with the mental effects of her treatments, Karin has learned to adapt and ask for help when needed. This lesson has inspired her to encourage other survivors who may be navigating similar paths, reminding them that it’s okay to lean on others and seek support.

“I would want other survivors to know you are not alone,” she shares. “There are many programs and groups out there that offer support; just ask, reach out.”

Participant Spotlight: Michael Burke

Michael Burke, survivor fitness participant

The battle with cancer can feel incredibly lonely, even after treatment is over. For many survivors, recovery comes with new challenges that are hard to face alone. But in the midst of these struggles, there are moments of hope and opportunities for deep, meaningful friendships.

This has been the experience of Michael Burke, a participant in Survivor Fitness. Through his journey, Michael found the strength to keep going and important connections that have made a lasting impact on his life.

Living with the Side Effects: Michael’s Ongoing Battle

Michael’s journey with cancer began in 2018 when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The initial surgery in 2019 was minimal and, unfortunately, ineffective. By 2021, he underwent a full radical prostatectomy. However, within 18 months, the cancer had metastasized, spreading to his lymph nodes and pelvic bones. After receiving nine weeks of radiation, Michael was placed on a double-dose hormone medication that carried the added risk of bone fractures.

While the radiation treatment lasted only nine weeks, the battle continued for Michael nearly two years later. He remains on the hormone medication, which has significantly impacted his mood, leading to increased depression and impatience. The physical toll was also severe, with excruciating pain in his hands and wrists, heightened sensitivity in his teeth, and persistent hot flashes—occurring every 15 minutes, even today.

Though these physical side effects have been challenging, Michael admits the hardest part has been finding the motivation to keep going each day. Getting out of bed, facing the physical pain, and not giving up became daily hurdles.

A Turning Point: Connecting with Survivor Fitness

Following his radiation treatments, Michael knew he needed help. Understanding that exercise could be a crucial part of both his physical and mental recovery, he began researching trainers who specialized in working with cancer patients. That’s when he stumbled upon Survivor Fitness.

“I knew if I was going to survive this, I needed help, and I knew physical exercise would help me both physically and mentally. Finding the Survivor Fitness website was invaluable.”

Michael recalls how emotional he felt when he first learned about Survivor Fitness.

“When I found the site and read the mission, it brought me to tears. I honestly couldn’t believe that Survivor Fitness existed. It was exactly what I needed.”

Shortly after, Michael was connected with Personal Best Fitness in Brentwood, TN. There, he began working with his trainer, Jordyn Faulks.

Michael started meeting with Jordyn twice a week. After his initial Survivor Fitness sessions ended, he continued working with her, finding in Jordyn not just a trainer but a true source of support and accountability.

“I was so tempted to call in sick and not show up,” Michael admits. “But I quickly realized how important it was for my mental and physical health to show up. Working out twice a week and discussing nutrition helped me have accountability and adopt more healthy habits.”

The impact of his sessions with Jordyn was immediate. Michael noticed improvements in his physical strength and in his ability to cope with the emotional challenges of his ongoing hormone treatment. Nearly two years later, he continues to train with Jordyn, and the benefits are undeniable.

“It’s the best thing I did because not only has it strengthened my bones, preventing fractures, but it’s also been my constant social time that has kept my mood and spirits up. I’m so grateful for Survivor Fitness, and especially for my friendship with Jordyn.”

Building Bonds Beyond Fitness

For Michael, the workouts have been beneficial for his mental and physical well-being. However, beyond the exercise, it has been the social connection that has made the biggest impact. As someone who worked remotely, Michael’s opportunities for social interaction were limited, especially during and after treatment. The two hours a week he spent with Jordyn became a vital part of his recovery.

“Jordyn has become a great friend, and I am convinced that between her and Olivia Fazini (another trainer at the gym), they have quite literally kept me alive.”

The bond between Michael and Jordyn extends beyond the gym. Both fans of Taylor Swift, they attended her Eras Tour concert together in May 2023, which came at a particularly low point in Michael’s struggle with depression. The concert turned out to be a transformative experience.

“It helped me so much. It was such an amazing, joyful concert with 70,000+ people all singing for over three hours. The boost has sustained me over the past year and a half, and it was a great bonding experience to share with Jordyn.”

For Michael, the friendships that have developed with Jordyn, Olivia, and others at Personal Best Fitness have been one of the greatest gifts of his cancer journey. They’ve taught him a valuable lesson about the importance of connection, particularly during difficult times.

“Many of us who are introverts tend to step away from our family and friends when we’re hurting physically and mentally, but I’m learning it’s exactly what I need. It’s so easy to get in our heads and think that we can’t go on another day, but there are so many people who want to help—they just need you to ask.”
