One of the challenges of cancer is the wake of uncertainty it creates, even after treatment. The desire to reclaim normalcy or simply “live again” can often clash with fears such as, “Will I ever feel the same again?” or  “Will the cancer return?” Navigating this uncertain terrain requires immense courage, strength, and resilience—qualities embodied by Survivor Fitness participant Brenda Snow.

Facing the Unknown with Courage

Brenda’s active life came to a halt after her diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma and DCIS breast cancer. The HER2-positive status of her cancer demanded a comprehensive treatment plan that encompassed surgery, chemo, radiation, and a year of Herceptin. While she handled the medical aspects with determination, the lingering unknowns became one of the most difficult challenges she faced.

“I tolerated my treatment very well, but the worry of what comes next weighs on me still,” Brenda shared.

Despite the fear, Brenda stepped boldly into her post-treatment journey, determined to reclaim her active life. She yearned to return to the tennis court and embrace the outdoors once again.

“I have always exercised and been very active,” she shared. “After treatment, I was looking for a way to return to my former self.”

Taking Steps Toward Recovery

That’s when Brenda discovered Survivor Fitness online and took yet another brave step. She applied and quickly connected with Ashley Walls, who introduced her to a personal trainer and nutrition specialist in her area. Like many participants, she deeply appreciated the scholarship assistance that made her next step possible.

“I am very grateful to them for the opportunity to work with a personal trainer,” Brenda said. “I would not have been able to do that without their financial help.”

After being paired with Nathaniel Barnett at D1 in Hardin Valley, Brenda embarked on a 12-week fitness training program tailored to overcome the unique challenges of breast cancer treatment and regain physical strength. Reflecting on her experience with Nathaniel, Brenda expressed gratitude, noting how he played a pivotal role in her recovery.

“He was very encouraging and helped me regain a lot of muscle back.”

Today, Brenda celebrates the ongoing steps in her journey, both literal and metaphorical. Engaging in regular walks, she has successfully regained her physical fitness. Her experience has instilled in her a deep appreciation for everyday joys and simple moments, small pleasures that can be all too easily taken for granted.

For those facing similar battles, Brenda offers a message of hope and empowerment: “Go for this program if you get the opportunity. It’s been an amazing journey.”

Brenda’s journey embodies the spirit of Survivor Fitness: strength forged from adversity and hope blossoming amid uncertainty. Her story reminds us that even in the face of the unknown, taking small steps can lead to remarkable leaps—physically, emotionally, and beyond.

Eating for Recovery: Nourishing Your Body After Cancer

a plate of colorful food on a wooden table

The journey after a cancer diagnosis can feel like charting a new map, with twists and turns you never anticipated. One crucial aspect of finding your footing again is reclaiming your energy and strength through food. Nourishing your body with the proper fuel can be life-changing, but the path forward isn’t always clear. You might face fatigue, side effects that impact your appetite, or just plain uncertainty about what’s best for your body.

At Survivor Fitness, we understand these challenges. Through our partnerships with incredible registered dietitians and nutrition specialists, we’ve seen the tremendous power of personalized nutrition as part of a holistic approach to recovery after cancer treatment. In this post, we’ll share some tips and hacks that have helped our participants thrive.

Nutritional Tips for Your Post-Cancer Journey: Find What Works for YOU

In the realm of post-cancer recovery and wellness, it’s essential to remember that nutrition is not a rigid set of rules but rather a new perspective. While general guidelines provide a foundation, there’s no singular “perfect” way to nourish your body.

As one of our partners, Jill Merkel, shared, “There’s so much misinformation and confusion about what to eat or not eat with a cancer diagnosis that people are afraid to eat. Helping participants to realize that there’s no perfect way of eating and helping them find what is right for them is my main goal.”

Make Small, Sustainable Changes

Drastic dietary overhauls might feel overwhelming, and often, tiny adjustments can lead to significant results. Allison Tallman, another one of our nutrition partners, describes it this way: “It’s better to make small changes one at a time rather than a lot of big changes all at once. This helps the changes you make actually stick.”

She encourages cancer survivors to make simple switches to their diet and celebrate each positive shift, no matter how small.

Make Sure To Fuel Your Body

When you’re battling fatigue or nausea from treatment, skipping meals might seem tempting, but fueling your body is crucial for healing. Aim for three regular meals and two or three healthy snacks a day. Choose foods that are easy to digest and pack an energy punch, like whole grains, lean protein, and fruits and vegetables. Listen to your body’s hunger cues and prioritize nourishing yourself.

Prioritize Protein

Protein is the building block of your cells, tissues, and muscles. Adding the right amount of protein can help counteract the muscle loss from cancer treatment.  That’s why one of the first areas of focus for our partners is to make sure participants eat enough food and get enough protein in their diet. This can include protein sources like lean chicken or fish. You can also find a variety of non-meat sources of protein

Embrace Mindful Eating

In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to rush through meals. Cultivate a habit of mindful eating, savoring each bite, and paying attention to hunger and fullness cues. This practice enhances digestion and fosters a deeper connection with your food.

Snack Smart

Stock your pantry with nutritious foods that are easy to grab and delicious. Some of the best options include trail mixes with dried fruit and nuts, Greek yogurt with berries, or mini bell peppers with hummus. Keep pre-cut vegetable sticks and slices and easy dips in the fridge for a quick and refreshing snack anytime.

Fuel your Body Before and After Exercise

As you embark on your fitness journey post-cancer, the importance of fueling your body cannot be overstated. Prioritizing nutrition before and after workouts can enhance performance, aid recovery, and support overall well-being.

Spice Up Your Water

Staying hydrated is an essential part of cancer recovery, but plain water can get a bit boring. Infuse your H2O with fruits, herbs, or vegetables to make it a tasty and hydrating treat. There are dozens of combinations you can choose from. Try cucumber and mint, watermelon and basil, or citrus slices for a refreshing twist. Bonus points for adding berries or ginger for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

From Surviving to Thriving: Embracing Nutrition’s Role in Recovery

Remember, your post-cancer journey is just as unique as your diagnosis and treatment. Your nutritional needs will evolve over time. Listen to your body, stay patient with yourself, and celebrate every small victory. If you’re struggling, don’t hesitate to seek professional guidance from a registered dietitian or nutritionist.

At Survivor Fitness, we believe in empowering you to take control of your recovery. We combine personalized training with expert nutritional support to help you build strength, regain energy, and rediscover the joy of movement.

We’d encourage you to explore our website for additional resources and recipe ideas. You can also learn more about our program or contact our team to discover how to become a Survivor Fitness participant today.

Board Member Spotlight: Michelle Hunter

Michelle Hunter headshot

The reality of living in a world touched by cancer is a paradox of extremes. On one hand, the battle with the disease and the aftermath of treatment are fraught with difficulty, fear, and isolation. Yet, cancer also possesses a powerful unifying force. Whether you’re a survivor or someone closely impacted by the disease, hearing another’s diagnosis ignites an instinctual desire to offer support, born from a shared understanding of the journey ahead.

This very idea led Michelle Hunter to join the board of directors at Survivor Fitness. Michelle is a seasoned marketing and sales professional residing in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She has already contributed her expertise to numerous nonprofit organizations, including the Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center. However, it’s her personal story with cancer that fuels her dedication to Survivor Fitness.

Finding Strength Together

With a significant history of hereditary cancer in her family, Michelle has witnessed firsthand the arduous process of regaining strength and vitality after treatment.

“I knew from my own experience that trying to regain my strength after treatment required a systematic approach and a team of encouragers,” Michelle shared. “I frequently got hurt because I wasn’t taking my limitations into account. I needed someone with a plan to help me stay safe.”

In addition to her personal battle with cancer, Michelle walked alongside family members through diagnosis and treatment. Watching them go through similar struggles solidified her belief in the importance of community. In fact, she first learned about Survivor Fitness while her daughter was undergoing treatment at Vanderbilt.

“Meeting Aaron and hearing about his success in overcoming his own health challenges as a young college student was incredibly encouraging for both my daughter and me,” Michelle said. “His unique perspective allowed him to connect with her in a way I couldn’t.”

From Patient and Parent to Advocate and Advisor

Deeply impressed by the need for Survivor Fitness’ services and the effectiveness of the holistic approach to post-treatment recovery, Michelle knew she wanted to be involved. In 2021, as Survivor Fitness announced its expansion into Chattanooga, Michelle saw the perfect opportunity to use her expertise and passion to support a cause close to her heart. She recently joined the board of directors, bringing her personal story and valuable perspective to the table to help more cancer survivors on their post-treatment journeys.

One of the highlights of Michelle’s time on the board was attending the annual Survivor Fitness Soiree in Nashville. This event serves as a platform to celebrate the achievements of participants and the impact the organization has made.

“As a parent, it helped me to see that my daughter’s journey is not unique. Finding a community that understood and supported our experience was incredibly meaningful.”

Despite the hardships cancer has brought to Michelle and her family, she remains grateful for the opportunity to leverage her experience to empower others. She is tremendously excited about Survivor Fitness’ continued expansion in Chattanooga and beyond.

“I believe there are so many people yearning to regain their zest for life, feeling lost and hopeless about moving forward,” she said. “The team at Survivor Fitness understands this process and is dedicated to making it easier.”

We are deeply grateful for Michelle’s perspective, expertise, and unwavering commitment to helping Survivor Fitness reach and serve more cancer survivors in Chattanooga, across Tennessee, and beyond. Her passion for connecting with others on their road to recovery is a powerful asset that will make a difference in the lives of countless cancer survivors who join our program.

Starting Strong: Gentle Exercise Tips for Cancer Survivors

a group stretching on yoga mats

Navigating the post-treatment journey after a cancer diagnosis can be daunting, especially in the first few weeks and months. On one hand, cancer survivors are grateful to be finished with treatment and excited about the opportunity to get back to living. On the other hand, regaining strength and energy often feels like a monumental task. As one of our participants put it, “Ringing the bell at the end of treatment felt very triumphant. There was a sense that now you can move on with your life, but I wasn’t feeling that at all.

At Survivor Fitness, we get that the physical, mental, and emotional terrain after a cancer diagnosis can feel uncharted and overwhelming. We’ve walked hand-in-hand with hundreds of survivors on this journey, and nothing warms our hearts quite like witnessing their transformation. But here’s a universal truth our team and trusted trainers share with almost everyone at the starting line: it’s okay to start slow. This isn’t a race to reclaim strength. It’s a mindful exploration of your body’s renewed potential. Every gentle step, every breath, every quiet victory is a testament to your resilience.

Gentle Exercise Tips for Cancer Survivors

While every cancer survivor’s journey is unique, we’ve found that reclaiming your physical and emotional well-being requires a gentle, evidence-based workout routine. In this blog, we wanted to highlight a few common gentle exercise tips for cancer survivors that we share with participants.

1. Focus on rebuilding your core strength and stability.

Many cancer treatments can weaken core muscles. But just like the sturdy foundation of a house, a strong core provides crucial stability for all your movements, from everyday activities to exercise. That’s why it can be helpful to start with pattern-based exercises to strengthen your core muscles, such as seated cat-cow, bird-dog, and superhero planks. Even if you’re not using resistance or weight, these exercises provide a stable base for all other movements and improve overall posture. Another way to build core strength is through practices like yoga and tai chi that combine movement with deep breathing, promoting both physical well-being and emotional resilience.

2. Explore gentle movement and cardio exercises.

Those first few days you can work out again are all about rediscovering the joy of movement, not pushing limits. The good news is that there are a variety of fun outdoor exercises for cancer survivors and their friends. Whether it’s a nature walk, cycling on a flat path, or tending your garden, outdoor activities offer a natural mood boost while gently engaging your muscles. Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of nature, allowing your body to move intuitively. You might also consider incorporating a few creative indoor exercise ideas during the colder winter months into your routine.

3. Listen to your body.

After cancer, it’s natural to want to jump back into old routines. But your body’s telling a different story about reclaiming your strength in a sustainable, joyful way. If you start to feel exhausted, listen to what your body is trying to tell you. It’s not a sign of weakness but a wise reminder to rest, refuel, and come back stronger! Remember: slow and steady wins the race, and your race is all about feeling good and strong.

4. Recognize how your diagnosis and treatment impact your capabilities.

Recognizing the unique impact of your specific type of cancer or treatment on your workout routine is crucial for maintaining a safe and effective fitness regimen. For example, women with breast cancer should be mindful of avoiding exercises that place excessive strain on the chest muscles. That’s why consulting with your medical professional or seeking guidance from a cancer exercise specialist is key. It’s imperative to tailor your workouts to your unique diagnosis. Remember, your cancer journey is unique, and your workout routine should be too!

5. Find creative and effective ways to modify exercises.

If a movement causes pain or makes you unsure in any way, it’s best to start with a modified exercise. This is especially true for cancer survivors seeking creative and effective ways to cater to their needs. There are several ways to modify an exercise to prevent injury and ensure you get the most out of your movement. For example, consider a modified push-up to add stability. If a movement includes jumping, you may change it without the jump or make the leap smaller to reduce the impact on your joints and leg muscles.

Let’s Start Strong Together

At Survivor Fitness, we believe in the transformative power of small steps. That’s why we offer a personalized fitness and nutritional program tailored to our participants’ specific needs and preferences.

Participant Spotlight: Amy McConkey

A cancer diagnosis often plunges individuals into a sea of uncertainty. The days and weeks following the diagnosis can be filled with confusion and apprehension. While proactive screening, advancements in medical technology, and the expertise of oncologists have improved cancer detection and treatment, each patient’s journey remains unique.

Amy McConkey’s experience exemplifies this blend of gratitude and navigating the unexpected. After an annual mammogram, a biopsy revealed two tumors in each breast, leading to a diagnosis of Grade 2 breast cancer. Amy was scheduled for a follow-up MRI and an appointment with an oncologist two days later. This initial appointment lasted three hours, and the results from the MRI significantly altered the course of Amy’s journey.

An Unexpected Diagnosis

During that initial three-hour appointment, Amy received a life-altering diagnosis that transformed her breast cancer journey. Instead of the Grade 2 breast cancer initially identified, Amy learned that she had an invasive, aggressive HER2-positive breast cancer. This aggressive form of cancer had formed tumors both within and outside her breast ducts.

“We thought we knew the treatment plan until we heard the words that more test results showed HER2 Positive Breast Cancer.”

Amy remembers that moment as a whirlwind of emotions, describing the experience as a “roller coaster ride” that had just taken a terrifying turn.  Despite the overwhelming news, Amy expressed gratitude for her oncologist’s compassionate approach and the time he dedicated to explaining the details of her condition and outlining the aggressive treatment plan that lay ahead. This plan involved six rounds of chemotherapy administered every three weeks, followed by surgery.

“At that point, life became one appointment after the other.”

Amy started her first round of chemo in September 2021. Five months later, she had a double mastectomy and almost immediately began another 14 rounds of targeted treatment for any cancer cells that might still be in her bloodstream. Amy completed treatment in December of 2022. During that time, she also had a complete hysterectomy. Despite the challenging treatment, Amy looks back on it with a grateful mindset.

“I am so thankful for the wonderful facility at TN Cancer Specialist, the doctors, nurses, and life-long friendships that were formed during this time.”

Life After Cancer Treatment

Exhausted from the grueling 20 rounds of treatment, Amy found herself constantly tired. Her bones ached, and her physical strength had dwindled.

“After ringing the bell on December 7, I thought life would finally be back to normal. That was not the case.”

Amy discussed her lingering concerns with her oncologist and surgeon. She knew she could find a personal trainer at a local gym, but that process was somewhat intimidating. She wanted a trainer who understood the lingering effects of chemotherapy and could tailor a plan to address her specific needs.

That’s when she was introduced to the program at Survivor Fitness.

Amy thought working out with a personal trainer might be embarrassing. Still, she reminded herself that nothing she faced would be as complicated as walking into the treatment room for her first round of chemo.

“Reminding myself of the steps I’ve already taken helped me get through the anxiety on my first day of workouts. I knew I had to get outside of my comfort zone to reach a new and better level of health and fitness.”

Growing Stronger and Healthier

Over the next twelve weeks, Amy worked alongside her trainer, Kathleen Bullock. From the initial session, Amy remembers how patient, supportive, and encouraging Kathleen was as she helped her set goals and gain confidence. Twice a week, Amy would wake up early and drive an hour to make her 8:00 a.m. workout session. As someone who had never enjoyed the gym, her own dedication surprised her.

Amy also appreciated receiving guidance from a registered dietitian as part of the program. Like many survivors, Amy was overwhelmed by the nutritional articles that often contained contradictory information. Amy’s dietitian provided guidance for pre and post-workout meals and daily meal prepping tips

“With my trainer’s support and guidance from my dietitian, I am stronger and healthier than before my diagnosis. Being able to work out is one of the many things I took for granted before being diagnosed. Now, I view it as something I get to do, NOT just something else I have to do.”

Becoming Better, Not Bitter

Looking back on her journey through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, Amy believes that maintaining a positive outlook was one of the most important practices to keep her going — especially on days when it seemed like the only thing she could control was her attitude.

“I had to choose whether I was going to become bitter or better. I believe the challenges I have faced have made me better. I am blessed to be surrounded by caring and supportive friends and family, doctors, nurses, and now a Survivor Fitness community.”

She recently celebrated her two-year “cancerversary”! More than anything, Amy hopes that her story can encourage and support others on their journey the way she has been so graciously supported.

Thriving Through the Holidays: A Guide to Health, Fitness, and Nutrition

tea and a pink sweet treat on a book that is on a bed of flowers

The holiday season is a time for joy, celebration, and connection with loved ones. However, it can also be a time of stress, overindulgence, and a disruption to our usual routines. Amidst the festivities and gatherings, it’s easy to let our health and wellness take a backseat.

The Challenge of Prioritizing Your Health During the Holidays

The holiday season presents unique challenges to maintaining healthy habits. The lack of routine and structure can lead to less mindful eating and fewer opportunities for exercise. The abundance of tempting food and drinks can make it challenging to resist overindulgence. And the stress of the season can further disrupt our sleep patterns and overall well-being.

Despite these challenges, it’s important to prioritize our health and wellness during the holiday season. At Survivor Fitness, we like to encourage our participants and their families to find one or two simple practices they can implement. By making small, consistent efforts, we can feel our best throughout the season and emerge energized and refreshed.

4 Strategies for Staying Healthy During the Holidays

Here are a few ideas you can use to prioritize your health, fitness, and nutrition during the holiday season.

1. Find simple and creative ways to incorporate movement into your day.

Even if you can’t commit to your usual workout routine, finding small ways to incorporate movement into your day can be helpful. Get creative with your definition of the word “movement.” It can include everything from taking a brisk walk after a meal to dancing to some holiday tunes during a commercial break in a football game. What you choose to do doesn’t matter as much as consistently incorporating physical exercise into your daily routine.

We like to encourage participants to make it a family affair. The holidays are a great time to go for a walk or bike ride together as a family or try a new workout routine with your spouse

2. Practice mindful eating.

Overeating or indulging in unhealthy foods is one of the biggest challenges of the holiday season. That’s why mindful eating can be such a helpful practice.

When attending holiday gatherings, take your time with your meals and savor your food and drinks. Pay attention to the taste, texture, and aroma of each bite. It can also be helpful to avoid distractions and simply use the meal as an opportunity to enjoy the company of your loved ones. This mindful approach can help you avoid overindulgence and fully appreciate the food.

3. Make a plan to eat healthy as much as you possibly can.

A little planning can go a long way, especially when maintaining a healthy diet during the holidays. It can be difficult to incorporate nutrient-rich foods into your meal plan, especially during times of the year when you’re out of your normal routine.

While you may not be able to influence what’s being served at the family gathering or work Christmas party, there are still ways you can be aware of your nutrition. For example, the holidays are a great time to start incorporating healthy snacks into your daily routine. Nuts are in season during the fall and winter, making them a great choice for healthy fats that boost memory and brainpower. Bring a healthy dish to share if you know you’ll be attending a potluck or other holiday event, and look for recipes packed with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Winter is the perfect time for nutritious options like winter squash, kale, cauliflower, beets, carrots, and fennel. When braised, steamed, or roasted, these seasonal veggies are warm, comforting, and delicious.

 4. Focus on the positives.

The holiday season is a time for gratitude and reflection. Don’t let the busyness of the season keep you from taking some time to appreciate the good things in your life, both big and small. You could keep a gratitude journal and take time each day to write down a few things you’re grateful for. The holidays are a great time to use positive affirmations for your health and wellness. One of the simplest ways to maintain your health (and sanity) during the holidays is to do one thing you enjoy daily, such as reading, listening to music, or spending time in nature.

A positive mindset can help you stay focused and motivated to stick with your healthy routines during the busy holiday season.

Here’s to a Thriving Holiday Season

The holiday season can be a wonderful time of year, but it’s important to remember that our health and wellness should always be a priority. So, take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy the holidays!

Participant Spotlight: Sherri Hoy

Participant Spotlight Sherri Hoy

Navigating the complexities of cancer is an arduous journey, with its impact lingering long beyond the realms of surgery and treatment. Recognizing the enduring challenges, maintaining a robust support network post-treatment becomes pivotal for cancer survivors. Sherri Hoy’s personal experience underscores the significance of this continued support.

In the fall of 2021, Sherri faced the unexpected diagnosis of stage 1 breast cancer following a routine mammogram. Within three months, she underwent surgery, vividly recounting the initial shock and disbelief that accompanied her journey.

“It rocked my world; I couldn’t believe this was happening to me.”

Sherri underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Like many cancer patients, she experienced a number of side effects, including muscle loss, hair loss, and neuropathy. She also struggled with chemo-brain and fatigue. Her last treatment left her with neuropathy in her feet, causing her to often feel off balance.

Turning Adversity into Motivation

The challenges continued as she began taking a medicine called Arimidex. This new treatment caused joint pain and further muscle decline, but Sherri continued to persevere.

“You’re not the same person after going through cancer. But after five years, I keep on keeping on and move forward each day.”

Despite the challenges, Sherri joined Survivor Fitness as a way to become stronger and “not let cancer beat her down.” She completed the 12-week program via Zoom, participating in weekly online sessions with her personal trainer. The impact of the program on her physical and mental well-being was profound, and she expressed lasting gratitude.

“I will be forever grateful that this program was made available to me. It made me stronger both physically and mentally.

Grateful for the Guiding Lights on the Journey

Throughout her cancer journey and Survivor Fitness experience, Sherri deeply appreciated the support network that surrounded her. She credits the diligent technician who discovered the small mass during her mammogram, her oncologist who provided emotional and spiritual guidance, and her personal trainer, who kept her motivated and excited about her fitness journey.

I got to the point where I couldn’t wait to get up in the morning and get going with training.”

Sherri acknowledges that her battle with cancer was challenging, but she remains grateful for the unwavering support that saw her through.

“Everything I needed, God provided for me, even this program to help me gain strength back. I will always be forever GRATEFUL! I just celebrated my 60th birthday, and I’m thankful things are as well as they are with me.”

Partner Spotlight: D1 Knoxville

Partner Spotlight D1 Knoxville

One of the best things about the Survivor Fitness program is that we partner with fitness trainers who are all specialists in their field.

These trainers also have a deep understanding of the power of movement and the effect fitness can have on mental and emotional well-being. They have a strong desire to help others, and they use their extensive expertise to create personal, customized training programs for cancer survivors after difficult, painful, and exhausting treatments and surgeries.

Andrew Kerr, a fitness coach and personal trainer at D1 Training Hardin Valley in Knoxville, is a perfect example of a trainer who works with Survivor Fitness. He’s been helping individuals reach their fitness goals for years, and he understands the unique challenges that cancer survivors face.

This year, Devin Driscoll, the owner of D1 Training in Knoxville, joined the Survivor Fitness board, and he tapped Andrew to help run the program at their location. Andrew immediately jumped at the opportunity, and he’s now responsible for helping new participants connect with coaches at D1 Knoxville.

“When Devin came to me about running the program—and with the good I knew it would do—there was no way I was turning it down,” Andrew said. “While I love getting the chance to work with athletes, I knew the opportunity that Survivor Fitness created is something that truly makes an immediate impact on those in the community.”

Andrew’s passion for helping cancer survivors is also driven by a personal connection to the disease. Earlier this year, his dad was diagnosed with lung cancer, and Andrew saw firsthand the devastating effects that both the illness and its treatment can have on a person’s physical and mental health. That experience made him even more determined to help others affected by cancer.

“We all know someone who has had cancer. It affects every single person who has any attachment at all to the person diagnosed. I and the other trainers want to use what we know to hopefully help others to live longer and healthier lives.”

From Chemo to Cones: Inspiring Stories from Participants

As a personal trainer, Andrew has seen firsthand the positive impact that physical fitness can have on anyone’s mental and emotional health. He is continually inspired to see this transformation happen in Survivor Fitness participants.

“My favorite part is knowing that after the first few weeks, they are going to start enjoying what we are doing and how they feel,” Andrew said. “It’s like clockwork. They come in after two to three weeks, and the soreness goes away while the motivation kicks in. It’s a joy to watch.”

One particularly memorable Survivor Fitness participant for Andrew was Brenda. Brenda started the program when she was 88 years old and had just finished her chemo. She was also a senior league tennis champion who was determined to continue playing.

“Watching her train and run cones at her age with the motivation and energy she did was inspiring, to say the least,” Andrew said.

Advice for Survivors: Embracing Small Milestones

D1 Knoxville has already worked with around ten cancer survivors, and they are eager to increase that number in the years to come.

“Exercise is such an important feature of healing, and we want as many people as possible to have access to that,” Andrew said.

Andrew and his team are passionate about helping cancer survivors recognize and celebrate the small milestones that make a big difference to their overall health and wellness. The team at D1 understands that cancer affects the body in many different ways, so they encourage participants to start slowly and be patient with themselves.

“It’s not about how much you lift—it’s about how you lift it,” Andrew said. “I like to use things that relate to daily life. If you can get up and down easier, if you can take a walk and not be exhausted, if you can do yard work and just enjoy being outside… those are the things that matter after fighting for your life.”

Andrew’s experiences with the program have led him to be an advocate for Survivor Fitness in the Knoxville area. He encourages people who are considering the program to take the plunge and go for it.

“My grandmother always used to say, ‘Don’t talk about it, be about it,'” Andrew said. “As the son of a cancer survivor, I want him around for as long as possible, so give yourself every tool available to continue the fight.”

A Wholesome Holiday Season: 25 Positive Affirmations for Health and Wellness

A closeup on hands writing in a journal with a cup of coffee.

The holidays are a time for joy, celebration, and spending time with loved ones. However, they can also be a time of stress, anxiety, and overindulgence. As we approach the holiday season, it’s important to take care of our overall health and wellness, both physically and mentally.

One way to do this is to practice positive affirmations. Positive affirmations are simple, positive statements that we repeat to ourselves to boost our self-esteem, confidence, and motivation. They can help us overcome negative thoughts and beliefs and create a more positive mindset.

The Science Behind Positive Affirmations

Social psychologists have been doing research on the self-affirmation theory for more than 40 years. Many people rely on positive affirmations when they’re feeling down, and researchers have found that they can improve an individual’s life in a variety of ways. Here are a few of the benefits of positive affirmations that have been studied and found to have an effect:

  • Self-affirmation promotes healthy behavior changes. (Source
  • Positive affirmation was effective in eliminating the deleterious effects of chronic stress on problem-solving performance. (Source
  • Affirmations can make us more likely to dismiss harmful health messages, responding instead with the intention to change for the better. (Source)
  • Positive affirmations can deliver long-term benefits by creating a positive feedback loop between the self and an individual’s ability to adapt over time. (Source

A Holistic Approach to Positive Affirmations

At Survivor Fitness, we’ve seen the transformative power of positive affirmations on overall health and well-being. Many of our participants have used them to thrive on their post-treatment journeys. But positive affirmations are also beneficial for family members and friends seeking to enhance their overall wellness.

We also recognize the importance of a holistic approach to wellness, as the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of our lives are inextricably linked. Research has shown that our emotions have a profound impact on our mental well-being, and these effects can even manifest physically. Incorporating positive affirmations into various aspects of our lives is one more step we can take to support ourselves during difficult times.

Below, we’ve curated a selection of our favorite positive affirmations for health and well-being. You may choose to incorporate one from each category into creating your morning routine or choose a specific affirmation to focus on as you embark on the holiday season to nurture your body, mind, and spirit.

Positive Affirmations for Physical Health

  1. My physical health and well-being are a journey, not a destination.

Participant Spotlight: Malicia Wilson

For Malicia Wilson, her family’s history of cancer made her vigilant about checking for signs of this disease. She lost her younger sister to breast cancer when she was 50 years old. This inspired her to be diligent about going every six months for checkups and mammograms or breast MRIs.

On Thanksgiving Day 2021, she noticed a lump during her routine self-exams. The following week, she had an ultrasound that detected cancer in three different places. After an initial lumpectomy, Malicia decided to have a total mastectomy, which went deeper into the chest wall to remove any potential cancer on the margins. A few months later, in June of 2022, she had reconstruction surgery.

After being unable to do much physically for 6-8 months, Malicia experienced everything from changes to her body to her mood from not having hormones.

“Needless to say, my chest muscles were so weak,” Malicia said. “I wanted to feel better and learn new ways of moving.”

Finding Hope for the Future

Malicia joined Survivor Fitness at the beginning of 2023—eager to work with a personal trainer who could help her identify routines to increase her strength. Her son, who works in the medical field, introduced his mother to the program after he learned about it through a friend who worked as a trainer.

Malicia was paired with Micah McKee at Chadwick’s Fitness in Franklin, TN. Like most participants, Malicia recognized the value in learning how to start where you are and continuing to show up every single session. She improved so much that she was selected as Chadwick’s Client of the Month due to improving her strength scores.

After 12 weeks, the program helped reverse some of the physical changes from treatment. But more than that, it gave her hope for the future.

“Hope was the biggest blessing,” she said. “It made such a difference to know I could still work hard and have a body that would respond.”

Celebrating New Family Milestones

Today, Malicia feels much more comfortable with her body. She maintains an active lifestyle by working out regularly.

Malicia recognizes how much that impacts her overall self-esteem and ability to enjoy life’s most meaningful moments again, especially when celebrating with family. Earlier this year, Malicia welcomed her first grandchild—a beautiful baby girl—into the family. She also celebrated her son’s wedding in Portland, Maine, a few weeks ago. These milestone moments mean so much more to her now as a healthy and thriving cancer survivor.

She credits Survivor Fitness for helping her regain strength, teaching her new ways to work out, and giving her the personal courage to do so.

“I am amazed at all the people who are out there to help—who give their time and talents, and I am eternally grateful,” she shared. “This program definitely contributed to where I am today as a Survivor!”
