Survivor Fitness began as a grassroots movement born from our own personal experiences navigating life after cancer. Over the years, our mission and programs have spread across Tennessee and beyond, thanks to the passion and dedication of the participants, partners, doctors, and friends who believe in what we do. One of the most exciting aspects of our journey is seeing supporters join our mission and help shape our future. 

Jamie Ernst is a perfect example of this spirit in action.

Jamie first learned about Survivor Fitness when her best friend, Laura Crawford, participated in the program back in 2016. She witnessed the transformative power of the program firsthand, observing Laura regain her strength and confidence post-treatment. Shortly after, the two began attending Survivor Fitness events together in Nashville, where Jamie was deeply moved by the positive impact these gatherings had on survivors.

“As someone who is passionate about health, fitness, and a holistic approach to well-being, Survivor Fitness’s mission deeply resonated with me. After hearing Aaron’s story and learning that insurance typically doesn’t cover aftercare for survivors, I felt a strong desire to help and be part of something impactful,” Jamie shared.

This experience ignited a spark in Jamie to become more involved. She joined the planning committee for the annual Nashville Survivor Soirée, contributing her energy and expertise to the event. 

Recognizing her unwavering passion and commitment, we invited Jamie to join our board of directors in 2024 so she could further her commitment to impacting the lives of cancer survivors.

Making Survivor Fitness a Household Name

As an artist Manager and director of marketing, Jamie understands the power of grassroots marketing and effective outreach. 

“Although Survivor Fitness has been around for some time, it still feels like we’re in the early stages of its growth, which is incredibly exciting,” she said. “I appreciate having the opportunity to be involved from the ground up.”

Jamie’s goal is to amplify Survivor Fitness’s reach and impact, ensuring that more cancer survivors know they’re not alone on the recovery journey and have access to our programs after treatment.

“My hope is for Survivor Fitness to become a household name for patients as they navigate their cancer journey, providing them with the support they need to thrive after treatment,” she expressed.

Looking Ahead with Vision and Determination

As a board member, Jamie continues to channel her passion into actionable change. She plays a crucial role in growing the Survivor Soirée event in Nashville, contributing invaluable insights on rebranding and marketing strategies for the organization. Her forward-thinking approach ensures that Survivor Fitness remains responsive to the evolving needs of the cancer survivor community.

“I’m excited about the growth of Survivor Fitness and the impactful initiatives underway, especially the expansion into mental health support.”

Jamie’s journey—from being inspired by a friend’s recovery to becoming a vital member of our board—illustrates the transformative power of community and shared purpose. Stronger Every Day: A Guide to Long-Term Healing After Cancer Treatment

The journey through cancer treatment is a testament to strength and resilience. But what happens after the final bell rings? While treatment may be over, the path to feeling whole again takes time, patience, and support. 

At Survivor Fitness, we recognize that the need for support doesn’t end after treatment. Around 83% of cancer survivors report lingering side effects from treatment, including fatigue and physical limitations. Additionally, up to 75% of survivors experience anxiety or cognitive concerns. 

Survivorship is a new chapter in healing and growth. In this article, we’ve compiled some of our most helpful tips and resources for building a fulfilling life and maintaining wellness as survivors embrace life beyond cancer treatment.

Best Practices for Long-Term Healing After Cancer Treatment

1. Remember that every journey is unique. 

Healing looks different for everyone, so each survivor’s recovery plan should meet them where they are. Progress is progress, no matter how small. You are doing something incredible by showing up for yourself every day. 

As Survivor Fitness participant Russ Campbell shared, “For me, I learned that perseverance was key. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.” 

It’s essential to be patient with yourself, understanding that healing is a process, not an event. Embrace the small victories, and remember that each step forward is a testament to your resilience.

2. Re-establish your routines to provide healthy structure.

It can be incredibly helpful to create a daily routine for life after cancer. Even if the schedule is short, it provides a foundation for rediscovering and reaffirming what you love. Whitney Biggs, a cancer survivor and mental health counselor on our board, offers this advice from her experience: “The best part of having an intentional practice is feeling the energy coursing through your body again, and the empowerment and peace it brings. These things worked to center me and gave me an outlet for the fear.” 

A routine can be your anchor, a way to reclaim normalcy and find stability amidst the changes. It’s about creating a rhythm that supports your physical and emotional needs.

3. Find joy in everyday movement. 

Exercise doesn’t have to feel like a chore—it should be something survivors enjoy and look forward to. Explore fun and enjoyable exercise activities that feel fulfilling, like dancing, swimming, gardening, or hiking. Movement should be a source of joy, not stress. As Survivor Fitness participant Ashley Blum shared about her experience, “Learning new ways to move has changed my life. I’ve been able to regain my wellness more than I ever imagined.” 

Rediscovering the joy of movement can be transformative, helping you reconnect with your body and find pleasure in physical activity.

4. Set realistic and sustainable goals. 

Recovery isn’t linear, and setbacks are normal. The key is to keep moving forward in a way that feels sustainable. Instead of focusing on a finish line, set small, attainable goals that evolve over time. This creates a long-term approach to health rather than a short-term push. 

As one of our fitness partners, Robbie Robertson, says, “A couple of really hard workouts right out of the gate will have roughly ZERO positive impact on your long-term health goals, but gradually building healthy habits into your routine—like working out regularly—will make them a lot more likely to stick.” 

Building sustainable healthy habits takes time and patience. Focus on consistency over intensity, and celebrate each milestone along the way.

5. Build your ongoing network of support.

Every cancer survivor knows that having the right people in their corner makes all the difference. That’s why we encourage survivors to build their support network by connecting with fitness professionals, nutritionists, therapists, and fellow survivors who understand their experience and can offer encouragement. 

As participant Michael Burke highlighted in his advice to survivors, “Many of us tend to step away from our family and friends when we’re hurting, but I’m learning they’re exactly what I need. There are so many people who want to help—they just need you to ask.” 

A strong support network can provide emotional support, practical assistance, and a sense of community, reminding you that you’re not alone.

Participant Spotlight: Claudia Rico

For many cancer survivors, “treatment” doesn’t end when radiation, chemo, or surgery is completed. Some face long-term plans that make it tough to feel “normal” again. Finding the motivation to keep going—physically, mentally, and emotionally—can be a huge challenge. But it can also be a season for taking steps toward real healing. Survivor Fitness participant Claudia Rico is a perfect example of this kind of resilience.

Claudia was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2022. With a family history of the disease, Claudia decided to have a double mastectomy followed by chemo, radiation, and reconstruction surgery. 

“Throughout treatment, I ate well,” Claudia says, “but the radiation scarring and lung inflammation caused a lot of pain. My energy was zapped, and I just didn’t feel like exercising.”

On top of everything, Claudia’s ongoing treatment includes five years of hormone blockers and bi-annual Zometa infusions to offset the damage the hormone blockers can do to her bones. 

“I have severe joint aches for two to three weeks after the infusions,” she shared. “What makes that tolerable is knowing it’s helping minimize osteoporosis, so I can keep exercising as I get older. I call that a win!”

Taking the Leap: Connecting with Survivor Fitness

Once Claudia recovered from surgery and the side effects of radiation had subsided, she began looking for ways to regain her strength. She saw Survivor Fitness mentioned several times in a Facebook group called Breast Connect and was inspired by the stories of fellow survivors who had benefited from the programs.

“The more I read about the difference Survivor Fitness was making for my breast cancer sisters, I knew I needed to fill out an application. I had nothing to lose and EVERYTHING to gain.”

After reaching out, Claudia connected with a Survivor Fitness team member who guided her through the process and paired her with Stephanie, a personal trainer in her area. Over the next twelve weeks, Claudia worked out with Stephanie, gradually regaining her strength and confidence. The training sessions were tailored to her unique needs, helping her ease joint pain through stretching, walking, and lifting weights.

But as many participants describe, Claudia shared how Stephanie’s support went far beyond the physical workouts.

“More than anything, the training showed me that even with three years left on hormone blockers, I can start living again now,” she explains. “Stephanie helped me realize I don’t have to wait until treatment is over to start truly living.”

Moving Forward: A New Chapter

After finishing the twelve-week program, Claudia was amazed at how far she’d come. She felt physically stronger and mentally more prepared to take on life’s challenges. She’s even exploring Survivor Fitness’s nutrition or mental health programs to keep her wellness journey going.

Looking back, Claudia sees just how much she’s overcome. These events have taught her to appreciate every moment and focus on controlling what she can.

Her advice to other cancer survivors?

“Take back control of your health and well-being,” she urges. “Even if Survivor Fitness isn’t right for you right now, take it one step at a time, one stretch at a time. Even going up one flight of stairs is progress. Just move away from the disease however you can—it will change everything.”
