Participant Spotlight: Tina Wuflestad

Tina Wuflestad, survivor fitness participant

The journey through cancer treatment is often described as a marathon, demanding immense physical and emotional fortitude. But what happens after crossing that finish line? Many cancer survivors find themselves facing a new landscape. The dedicated support of their medical team begins to shift, and the path to rebuilding strength can feel uncertain. During this crucial phase, a different type of support system is needed.

Tina Wuflestad’s story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the profound impact of personalized support in navigating life after cancer. Through her journey with Survivor Fitness, Tina found her physical strength again and discovered a renewed sense of hope and empowerment for the road ahead.

Navigating the Highs and Lows of Treatment & Recovery

Tina was diagnosed with triple positive breast cancer (invasive ductal carcinoma) in April of 2022. Over the next 13 months, her treatment plan was intensive: 12 weeks of chemotherapy, followed by a bilateral mastectomy in September 2022, and then 11 rounds of targeted therapy.

Throughout this challenging period, Tina proactively explored integrative therapies and lifestyle changes to bolster her body’s ability to cope. But even with these holistic approaches, the toll of treatment left her physically depleted.

“Because of the intensity of my chemotherapy regimen, I didn’t have a lot of energy, and I had a few days in between rounds when I didn’t feel up to anything at all,” Tina explained.

Her course of treatment inevitably impacted Tina’s mental and emotional well-being. The constant battle against fatigue and the uncertainty of recovery presented significant hurdles—something many cancer survivors know all too well.

“The hardest part of the journey for me was maintaining the proper mindset for the treatment and healing of my body. There were many ups and downs along the way, but keeping my eyes on the ultimate goal was key,” Tina reflected.

As her treatment concluded, Tina recognized the critical need to actively rebuild her strength and establish a “new normal.” That’s when a friend told her about Survivor Fitness.

Finding a Personalized Path Forward

With her oncologist’s support, Tina applied to the programs after completing her treatments and surgeries. Her goal was simple but powerful: to regain physical strength and take back ownership of her health.

What she found, however, was something much deeper. Like many Survivor Fitness participants, Tina soon discovered the program’s profound benefits for her mental and emotional health as well.

Working one-on-one with a fitness specialist who understood the unique challenges of cancer recovery gave Tina the foundation she needed to move forward with confidence.

“During my time with Survivor Fitness, I enjoyed not only the accountability I had with my trainer, but the customization of exercises specifically tailored to me and my needs. I was able to strengthen my body with proper form and begin the process of regaining my energy and stamina,” Tina shared.

This personalized support instilled in Tina the confidence to continue her fitness journey independently, equipped with the knowledge to understand her body’s needs and how to adapt her exercise routine moving forward.

“Survivor Fitness provided a partnership in my training to guide me and encourage me in order to meet my goals. The support was invaluable to me,” Tina said.

You’re Stronger Than You Think

Tina’s story shows the profound impact of a dedicated partnership in helping cancer survivors rebuild their physical strength and rediscover their inner resilience and confidence.

When asked what advice she would offer someone navigating a similar post-cancer journey, Tina’s message is clear and encouraging.

“Reach out to Survivor Fitness and start the programs. You will learn things about yourself that will surprise you. You are stronger than you think.”

Find Your People: The Power of Support Systems in Cancer Recovery

cancer survivors and supporters

Here in Tennessee, we’re proud to call Drew Holcomb one of our own. His song, “Find Your People,” isn’t just a catchy tune; it’s an anthem that deeply resonates with the journey of cancer survivors. The lyrics remind us of the power of connection and the importance of having people who lift you up, especially during life’s most challenging moments.

“In a world of strangers, you don’t know who to trust
All you see is danger, tryna find what you lost
You can’t go in alone, everybody needs help
You gotta find your people, then you’ll find yourself.”

For many cancer survivors, the need for a strong support system doesn’t end when treatment does. In fact, life after cancer can feel even lonelier. The doctors and nurses who provided compassionate care are no longer part of your routine. Friends and family, while well-meaning, may assume you’re “better” now and moving on. This transition can leave survivors feeling even more isolated as they navigate the complexities of life after cancer.

At Survivor Fitness, we understand that building a strong support system is vital for long-term healing and wellness. We’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of community, and we’re here to help you find your people.

The Benefits of a Strong Support System for Cancer Survivors

Having a supportive network can make a world of difference in your recovery journey. Here are some key benefits:

1. Emotional Encouragement for Your Unique Challenges

According to multiple studies, social support is strongly associated with lower levels of depression and anxiety in cancer survivors. Sharing your experiences with others who understand can alleviate emotional burdens and foster a sense of belonging. Knowing that others care and are there to listen can be a powerful source of comfort during challenging times.

    2. Meaningful Connections to Help You Find Your Path to Recovery

Recovering after cancer treatment is a deeply personal journey, and having the right support can make all the difference. At Survivor Fitness, we understand that individualized support is key to helping survivors take the next step in their recovery. That’s why our program partners aren’t just experts in their fields—they have experience working with cancer survivors and, in many cases, personal connections to cancer themselves. They understand the challenges survivors face and provide personalized guidance, encouragement, and accountability to help each individual navigate their unique path forward.

    3. Increased Motivation for Regaining Strength & Health

Prioritizing fitness is a crucial part of regaining strength after cancer. Having someone to exercise with, trade healthy recipes with, or simply check in on your progress can make a significant difference. This accountability can help you stay motivated and committed to your well-being. Research published in the journal Supportive Care in Cancer highlights that social support can positively influence adherence to healthy behaviors in cancer survivors.

This is something we’ve seen time and time again at Survivor Fitness. Nearly every participant spotlight shares how the encouragement they received from their trainer or nutrition coach became a valuable part of their recovery journey.

This is also why we regularly offer group workshops and fitness classes to provide ongoing opportunities for alumni to gain motivation and camaraderie. You can connect with us on Facebook or Instagram to learn about our upcoming workshops.

They also find themselves personally transformed by the journey of working with Survivor Fitness participants.

David Rogers is one of those trainers.

David is an AFAA Certified Personal Trainer who has been building a successful career in the health and wellness industry since 1993. He has worked with Survivor Fitness participants at A|Train Fitness in Nashville since 2020 and is one of our biggest advocates and supporters. To date, he has worked with more than 30 participants—each one leaving a lasting impact on his life.

    Motivated to Make a Difference

David’s connection to the Survivor Fitness mission is deeply personal. Having witnessed multiple family members battle cancer, he understands the emotional and physical toll that comes with the journey. That personal connection fuels his dedication to helping cancer survivors regain their strength, both physically and mentally.

“Seeing their struggles and the determination of each Survivor Fitness client makes me realize that anything is possible through exercise, health, and wellness,” David shares.

For David, working with Survivor Fitness participants is more than just training—it’s transformative. He finds immense satisfaction in seeing participants grow throughout the programs. Witnessing their increasing confidence, resilience, and physical abilities is incredibly rewarding.

“A handful of my clients started the 12-week program with tears of sadness, despair, and doubt but ended with tears of joy, excitement, and promise for the life ahead,” he says.

    Growth and Transformation

David believes every cancer survivor’s journey is unique, and working with Survivor Fitness has reinforced the importance of understanding, adaptability, and perseverance. He sees every participant’s first step into the gym as a victory.

“There’s only one way to go when starting the programs: little by little. Participants get stronger, gain balance, and have more endurance for everyday living,” David explains. “Even if they start from scratch due to treatments and surgeries, they all progress toward a more normal life.”

One key lesson David has learned is the value of individualized personal fitness training for cancer survivors. Every participant has unique needs based on their medical history, treatments, and limitations. He works alongside participants to adjust and adapt exercise routines to match their specific capabilities and goals. By focusing on small, personalized adjustments, David ensures everyone finds success at their own pace.

However, the most meaningful part of his work is the deep connection built between trainers and participants. As much as he helps survivors reclaim their strength, David feels equally enriched by their growth and determination.

“Survivor Fitness is a game-changer for both the participant and the trainer!” David exclaims. “This program gives participants purpose in recovery, and it gives trainers fulfillment in their craft. With every graduating participant, I learn lessons that are just as valuable when it comes to determination and the will to live!”
