Many of our Survivor Fitness partners share subject matter expertise, a deep desire to help others and a personal connection to cancer recovery. They bring both professional knowledge and personal passion to their work, making a profound impact on the lives of cancer survivors. One of those partners is Ashley Teltow, a registered dietitian whose journey into nutrition was shaped by her own struggles with disordered eating, digestive issues, and hormonal imbalances. Her personal experiences ignited a passion for digestive and hormonal health, ultimately leading her to a career dedicated to overall well-being.
A Personal Mission
After completing her master’s degree and becoming a registered dietitian nutritionist, Ashley joined At the Table, a nutrition consulting practice actively partnering with Survivor Fitness. For her, the opportunity to support cancer survivors wasn’t just a seamless professional transition—it was personally meaningful due to her own close connections to cancer recovery.
“My fiancé beat cancer as a senior in high school. Seeing the dedication he puts towards his health and well-being is inspiring and pushes me to be better every day. I see the same motivation in Survivor Fitness participants.”
Since November 2024, Ashley has worked virtually with more than 25 Survivor Fitness participants. The deeply rewarding experience has further fueled her passion for helping others rebuild their strength and find a more rewarding approach to healthy eating.
“Working with cancer survivors has enhanced my motivation to support others on their health journeys by really meeting people where they are nutritionally.”
Resilience in Action
One of the most meaningful aspects of Ashley’s work is witnessing the resilience of Survivor Fitness participants who have endured immense challenges but approach their recovery with unwavering determination and positivity.
“Most of the participants have been through more than most of us can imagine, yet they are still the most positive, friendly, and courageous people I have worked with. They are always willing to try and are motivated for the changes and goals we make together.”
Ashley recalls working with one participant who had been diagnosed with cancer more than six times throughout her life. Initially hesitant about nutritional coaching, the participant quickly embraced the process after their first session together. The information and support Ashley provided gave her newfound motivation, and she became eager to continue making positive changes.
Beyond individual success stories, Ashley has been deeply inspired by the strong sense of community within Survivor Fitness. She has seen firsthand how every person involved—from participants to partners—offers encouragement and support, creating a network of strength and resilience.
“Witnessing the strength and determination of cancer survivors has influenced my own outlook on life and health. It really makes you appreciate what you have in life and never take your health for granted.”
The Power of Gentle Consistency
When working with Survivor Fitness participants, Ashley emphasizes two key principles: gentle consistency and self-care.
“Nutrition is not an all-or-nothing mindset, and you don’t have to be perfect. Nutrition is very nuanced and individual; just because it worked for someone else doesn’t mean it is what’s best for you!”
She encourages survivors to focus on making small, manageable changes over time, which can lead to sustainable habits that improve overall health. One of her core recommendations is to prioritize antioxidant- and anti-inflammatory-rich foods, which play a crucial role in supporting immune function.
“Food truly is medicine, especially for survivors whose immune systems are already compromised from treatment. We focus on what we can add to your plate to make meals more nutritious rather than listing off foods you should avoid.”
