Partner Spotlight: Ashley Teltow

Many of our Survivor Fitness partners share subject matter expertise, a deep desire to help others and a personal connection to cancer recovery. They bring both professional knowledge and personal passion to their work, making a profound impact on the lives of cancer survivors. One of those partners is Ashley Teltow, a registered dietitian whose journey into nutrition was shaped by her own struggles with disordered eating, digestive issues, and hormonal imbalances. Her personal experiences ignited a passion for digestive and hormonal health, ultimately leading her to a career dedicated to overall well-being.

A Personal Mission

After completing her master’s degree and becoming a registered dietitian nutritionist, Ashley joined At the Table, a nutrition consulting practice actively partnering with Survivor Fitness. For her, the opportunity to support cancer survivors wasn’t just a seamless professional transition—it was personally meaningful due to her own close connections to cancer recovery.

“My fiancé beat cancer as a senior in high school. Seeing the dedication he puts towards his health and well-being is inspiring and pushes me to be better every day. I see the same motivation in Survivor Fitness participants.”

Since November 2024, Ashley has worked virtually with more than 25 Survivor Fitness participants. The deeply rewarding experience has further fueled her passion for helping others rebuild their strength and find a more rewarding approach to healthy eating.

“Working with cancer survivors has enhanced my motivation to support others on their health journeys by really meeting people where they are nutritionally.”

Resilience in Action

One of the most meaningful aspects of Ashley’s work is witnessing the resilience of Survivor Fitness participants who have endured immense challenges but approach their recovery with unwavering determination and positivity.

“Most of the participants have been through more than most of us can imagine, yet they are still the most positive, friendly, and courageous people I have worked with. They are always willing to try and are motivated for the changes and goals we make together.”

Ashley recalls working with one participant who had been diagnosed with cancer more than six times throughout her life. Initially hesitant about nutritional coaching, the participant quickly embraced the process after their first session together. The information and support Ashley provided gave her newfound motivation, and she became eager to continue making positive changes.

Beyond individual success stories, Ashley has been deeply inspired by the strong sense of community within Survivor Fitness. She has seen firsthand how every person involved—from participants to partners—offers encouragement and support, creating a network of strength and resilience.

“Witnessing the strength and determination of cancer survivors has influenced my own outlook on life and health. It really makes you appreciate what you have in life and never take your health for granted.”

The Power of Gentle Consistency

When working with Survivor Fitness participants, Ashley emphasizes two key principles: gentle consistency and self-care.

“Nutrition is not an all-or-nothing mindset, and you don’t have to be perfect. Nutrition is very nuanced and individual; just because it worked for someone else doesn’t mean it is what’s best for you!”

She encourages survivors to focus on making small, manageable changes over time, which can lead to sustainable habits that improve overall health. One of her core recommendations is to prioritize antioxidant- and anti-inflammatory-rich foods, which play a crucial role in supporting immune function.

“Food truly is medicine, especially for survivors whose immune systems are already compromised from treatment. We focus on what we can add to your plate to make meals more nutritious rather than listing off foods you should avoid.”

How Survivor Fitness Can Support Your Journey

For those considering Survivor Fitness, Ashley shares a heartfelt message:

“Having a community and someone to talk to through this major life change, no matter where you are on your journey, is so beneficial for not only your physical health but your mental health!”

Participant Spotlight: Russ Campbell

Russ Campbell, survivor fitness participant

Recovering after cancer treatment—whether it’s chemo, radiation, or surgery—demands as much strength, determination, and resilience as the treatment itself. It’s essential to remember that recovery takes time.

This sentiment perfectly captures the journey of Survivor Fitness participant Russ Campbell. Russ was diagnosed with large B cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 2023. His treatment began in February 2024 and consisted of six rounds of chemotherapy administered every three weeks. While he was fortunate not to require surgery or radiation, the journey was anything but easy.

The chemo treatments took a toll on Russ, particularly during the 72 hours following each session, which he described as the most challenging part of his journey. “It usually took a week to 10 days to feel somewhat normal again,” he shared.

Tapping Into a New Level of Mental and Emotional Strength

For Russ, the recovery process was as much a mental battle as a physical one. Before cancer, he was an active 52-year-old who prioritized fitness, but chemotherapy left him dealing with intense nausea, weakness, and fatigue. To combat these symptoms, Russ leaned on his greatest assets: a strong mindset and an incredible support system.

“My wife and kids were instrumental in my success,” Russ said. “Their love and kindness were some of the keys to my recovery.”

Determined to stay active even on the toughest days, Russ pushed himself to move—whether walking the halls during treatment, going for longer neighborhood walks after treatment, riding his e-bike, or lifting light weights. “For me, I learned that perseverance was key. It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” he reflected.

Getting Connected with Survivor Fitness

A few months after completing treatment, Russ sought a more tailored approach to his fitness recovery. A friend who had recently completed Survivor Fitness recommended the programs, and Russ decided to try it. With the financial burdens of his cancer diagnosis, the availability of these no-cost programs made starting his journey toward recovery a real possibility.

Russ was matched with Jillian Spencer, a trainer at Chadwick’s Fitness in Franklin. From the very beginning, Jillian’s expertise and support proved invaluable. “Jillian was nothing short of amazing! She was instrumental in progressing the physical and mental aspects of my journey,” Russ shared.

Jillian began with a careful evaluation of Russ’s capabilities, introducing exercises gradually to prevent injury while building his strength and confidence. Weekly sessions provided a structure and commitment that kept him motivated. As he progressed, Jillian increased the intensity of his routines.

“Survivor Fitness gave me a catapult back into my previous fitness,” Russ said. “In the end, I came out of the programs feeling stronger, healthier, and mentally ready to tackle training on my own.”

Rediscovering Strength and Hope

Since completing the Survivor Fitness programs, Russ has maintained an active lifestyle. He spends an hour at the gym every day, rides his bike three times a week, and recently started rock climbing to add variety to his workouts.

“I’m feeling amazing and strongly recommend anyone who has gone through treatment to give Survivor Fitness a try. It was life-changing!” he shared.

Small Steps, Big Impact: How to Create Sustainable Health Goals for the Year Ahead

The start of a new year often brings a sense of possibility—a chance to reflect, reset, and set new goals. For cancer survivors, this moment can be both exciting and daunting. Life after treatment often comes with its own set of challenges, from adjusting to new physical realities to navigating uncertainty about what’s possible.

The good news is that setting and achieving health goals is absolutely within reach. At Survivor Fitness, we see it every day in the stories of our participants. The key is focusing on goals that create a lasting, meaningful impact.

How to Build Sustainable Health Goals That Last

Here are some practical insights and advice to help you establish sustainable health goals for the year ahead.

1. Focus on Your Path, Not Someone Else’s

It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing your journey to another person’s journey, but every cancer survivor’s story is different—and that means every recovery is unique. Instead of striving for someone else’s goals, focus on what’s achievable and meaningful for you. This might mean adapting exercise routines based on your current capabilities, energy levels, and age.

As one of our training partners, Randianne Sears, explains, “Each cancer survivor has a different story, and that means different recoveries. You can’t duplicate the same training for someone.”

Embracing this mindset allows you to honor your journey while building a plan that works for your body and your life.

2. Progress, Not Perfection

Progress isn’t always a straight line, and accepting that reality is essential to staying motivated on our health journey. Some days, you might feel ready to conquer the world. On other days, rest might be the best option. That’s okay. Success lies in responding to our bodies, even if that looks different from one day to the next.

As Anna Brown, a certified personal trainer at Peak Fitness, reminds us, “Training is not always linear, and it is not one size fits all! Progress takes time, but the progress is undeniable!”

By keeping a balanced perspective, you can stay focused on the big picture, even during tough moments.

3. Think Habits Over Hustle

While it’s tempting to aim for a specific milestone, long-term health is more about habits than immediate outcomes. Establishing daily or weekly routines—like morning stretches, regular workouts, or mindful eating—creates a foundation for lasting success.

As training partner Robbie Robertson wisely notes, “A couple of really hard workouts right out of the gate will have roughly ZERO positive impact on your long-term health goals, but gradually building healthy habits into your routine (like working out regularly) will make them a lot more likely to stick.”

Instead of focusing on quick fixes, commit to small, consistent actions that build over time.

4. Measure Progress Beyond the Scale

For cancer survivors, progress may not always show up on a scale. That’s why finding alternative ways to measure success—like improved stamina, increased strength, or even simply feeling better—can be so powerful.

Sarah Denger, a cancer survivor and one of our partners, shares this encouragement:
“Attitude is everything. Cancer takes a toll on the body, and discouragement can be crippling. But cancer survivors are warriors, and I remind them to celebrate what they can do instead of dwelling on what they can’t.”

Recognizing and celebrating small victories reinforces your efforts and keeps you motivated to continue.
